已快到了知天命的年龄，区亚中年上班族筒井肇（中井贵一 饰）的事业顺风顺水，区亚现任某大型家电制造公司经营企划室负责人的他，刚刚得到了内定升迁的消息。只不过虽然饮食无忧，但与妻子由纪子（高岛礼子 饰）却渐行渐远，鲜有共同语言。女儿倖（本假屋唯佳 饰）则似乎对未来一片迷茫，不知何去何从。这一天，筒井突然收到住在老家的母亲（奈良冈朋子 饰）病倒的消息，而同期入社的好友川平（远藤宪一 饰）死于意外事故的噩耗更让他深受触动。在回老家的这段时间，他开始反思人生，并且想起了童年时代的梦想——成为一名单车厢的电车司机。人生的岔路口上，筒井终于下定决心辞职，以49岁的高龄朝向儿时的梦想迈进……

The film starts with verse 67, “O somma luce…” and continues to the end. “O Somma luce” recalls the first words uttered by Empedocles in Danièle Huillet and Jean-Marie Straub’s 1987 The Death of Empedocles—“O himmlisch Licht!…” (O heavenly light!). This extract from Hölderlin’s text is also inserted into their 1989 film Cézanne.“O somma luce” invokes utopia, or better still “u-topos,” Dante, Holderlin, Cézanne… the camera movement, recalling Sisyphus, in the film’s long shots, suggests its difficulty.In O somma luce, with Giorgio Passerone’s Dante and the verse that concluded the Divine Comedy, we find at the extremity of its possibilities, the almost happy speech of a man who has just left earthly paradise, who tries to fully realize the potential of his nature.
