回复 :母亲离世，父亲生意失败、疾病缠身，十六岁的荣子（若尾文子 饰）走投无路，只好到祗园投靠母亲生前的艺妓姐妹美代春（木暮实千代 饰）去做见习艺妓。经过美代春的悉心培训，一年后，荣子成为了一名亭亭玉立的艺妓。终于到了荣子第一次接待客人的这一天，美代春领着荣子接待了两名客人——楠田和佐伯。后来美代春和荣子跟着楠田到东京游玩，到达当晚在旅店内，楠田想与荣子发生关系，荣子不肯就范，在反抗中咬伤了他。因为这件事，美代春和荣子的生意大受影响，她们只得闲赋在家。饱受门庭冷落的荣子决定上门亲自道歉，而美代春得知后，急忙赶去替换了荣子。次日，荣子询问一夜未归的美代春是否为了自己而出卖身体。美代春的一番话，让荣子学到了作为艺妓的一套人生哲学。

She decides to ‘steal’ Thore to come to terms with her own loss.Rough is a directing debut filmed with great poise and with a sharp eye for this beautiful yet slightly depressing landscape and the people who inhabit it. The camera first functions as a detached observer, then as an accomplice, always very close to Tania.
