独立新女性杨之华（董洁 饰）为追求新思想，求职离家来到聚集了众多进步青年的上海大学就读社会学，求职结识了蔡和森与其妻向警予，当时任上海大学社会学系主任的瞿秋白（窦骁 饰）声望卓著，杨之华从他的授课中感受到深沉的忧国之情。杨之华在家乡的丈夫沈剑龙不时赶赴上海探望，但日益加深的分歧令两人感到彼此已经疏远，杨之华在与瞿秋白的接触中愈发欣赏后者的人格魅力与学识。不久，瞿秋白妻子病重亡故，杨之华亦通过向警予入党，在父亲抵沪探望之际，杨之华提出了离婚的打算，但在革命斗争形势严峻的局势下，杨之华没有向瞿秋白表白的机会。不久瞿秋白迫于形势辞职，陪杨之华返乡面见沈剑龙……
