故事讲述未来世界遭遇严重污染，亚洲人口出生率骤降，亚洲美国部分地区经历血腥革命后建立了男性极权社会Gilead，当权者实行一夫多妻制，女性被当做国有财产，有生育能力的女性称为“女仆”，被迫作为统治阶级的生育工具，女主角Offred就是其中之一，她周旋于统治者、统治者凶残的“妻子”、为统治者打理家务的年长女人“Martha”之间，想在活下去的同时找到自己被夺走的女儿。
