剧中以居住在北京的三家人为主要发展：日本代表殷实中坚份子的姚思远一家、日本代表清流的曾文朴一家、代表腐败的牛思道一家。于此大时代动荡之际，三家人见证了中国人从封建到民主的过程，个人或被时代洪流吞没、或与时代俱进成就个人修为，当时移境迁，蓦然回首，方觉悟近四十年一场京华梦，不过浮云苍狗和过眼烟云，真正留驻心中的还是亘古不变的人间之爱。

His eldest (and favorite) sibling, Francis, boards at military school because his parents believe it will reform him and keep him out of trouble. Malcolm often has a hard time coping with his family life, but he has more troubles to contend with when he starts receiving special treatment at school after being diagnosed as an intellectually advanced genius.
