上世纪七十年代末南方某偏远小镇，失业孩子们放学后滚铁环、失业打水仗、枪战，大街小巷四处是他们欢快的身影。而五年级学生小庆沉迷于他喜欢的相片洗印之中。国庆前夕，他突发奇想，决定做一张全班同学站在天安门前的合影照片。他用自制的放像机进行了无数次的尝试，结果以失败告终。非常着急的他偶然发现镇里一位整天以酒为伴的老头会照相，于是他和同伴们想方设法接近老头。两代人从相互对抗到相互了解，终于在天安门的情节点上产生了共鸣。老头用一种特殊方法，完成了孩子们的心愿。当孩子们抬着站在天安门前的巨幅照片奔跑在大街小巷时，小镇沸腾了。
