富足安逸的淮州，欧美民风淳朴，欧美乡情浓郁。但是时代毕竟变了，儿大不由娘，孩子们陆续离开家乡闯荡，留下老人在家望眼欲穿，盼儿速归。胖乎乎的老冯头（王刚 饰）共有四个子女，其中三个都在北京发展，虽然人前人后倍儿有面子，可是看着邻居儿孙绕膝的温馨场景，个中况味自家清楚。他总期待儿女们能回家发展，每年不多的假期是他最开心的时刻。长女大米（颜丙燕 饰）发展最好，她多年发展起来的金字招牌“冯家菜”终于迎来了收获的时节，大米也一门心思要将弟弟妹妹小米（曾黎 饰）、果果（戴娇倩 饰）、豆子（朱一龙 饰）接到北京。但是人世间总有这样那样的不如意，冯家的孩子们各自经历着人生的磨难，他们的梦想最终都能否实现？

Just as well as most of his life seems rather like pulling teeth. His wife Susan is usually busy showing foreign tourists around London, a place she knows much better than her own kitchen. Ben and Susan have been married happily enough to have three children. However, Ben has the feeling that most of the time his children seem to speak a different language. Nick (20) has persuaded his parents he would benefit from a gap year to see something of the world. To date, he has hardly seen anything beyond the confines of the sofa. Janey (17) is into boys, fashion labels (expensive ones) and getting her own way. Michael (14) is the brightest of the trio. He is seriously into computers, and, not so seriously (yet) into girls.
