回复 :内向的波兰裔青年塔尔科夫斯基（罗曼·波兰斯基 Roman Polanski 饰）独自来到巴黎，希望在此租住一间公寓。这间房之前的房客西蒙·肖（Romain Bouteille 饰）不知出于何种原因跳楼自杀。在西蒙于医院中气绝身亡后，塔尔科夫斯基顺利地成为了新的房客。乔迁之喜并未给他带来太多欢乐，周遭的压抑气氛无时无刻不在侵扰他的神经。这桩古老的公寓中住着许多古板沉闷的人，他们抱怨塔尔科夫斯基制造过多的噪音、联名排挤其他房客……这个可怜的青年虽然小心应对，却渐渐被他们逼向绝境。塔尔科夫斯基开始意识到西蒙·肖自杀的原因，他同时发现，自己也正被这群怪房客引向毁灭的终点……
