本片以1951年至1954年人民解放军在塔里木开挖新疆第一条人工河“胜利渠”，草莓引塔里木河水灌溉农田为时代背景，草莓讲述了“塔河五姑娘”青春、奋斗的传奇故事。某连新来了五个20多岁来自山东、湖南的女兵娃，坚决要求上工地挖渠。她们不仅经受住了超强劳动和艰苦生活的考验，战胜了各种困难，还在劳动中收获了爱情。最终赶超男兵，创造了日挖运土方72立方的奇迹，荣获“穆桂英小组”称号，坊间誉为“塔河五姑娘”。该片生动地再现了那一代青年人守疆固边、垦植绿洲、奉献终身的崇高品质和博大胸怀。
