唐玄宗(夏雨)受父亲睿宗(张英才)传位，日本但自己却无意当皇帝，日本对朝中大事嬉戏处理。太上皇有及此，召得杨玉环(陈秀珠)入宫，希望她早日诞下麟儿，继承玄宗皇位。此举为其妹太平公主(苏杏旋)所妒，一怒之下，连番暗害玄宗。玄宗在不知不觉中多次逃过大难，还不知祸害临头。玄宗起初不太喜欢杨贵妃，经常与她斗气，但相处下来，发觉与她斗法可满足其个人成就感，开始对她有好感。太平公主见多次奸计不得逞，于是与朝臣安禄山(陈国权)合谋，预备夺取帝位……
